Luke 11:37-53 is a somewhat different meal story. When a Pharisee invited Jesus to eat with him, we are told that the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not wash before the meal. We do not know exactly what the Pharisee said, but Jesus offered a withering response. Jesus dealt with the Pharisee’s problems of hypocrisy. The lesson here is when we become more concerned with the details of a person’s outward cleanliness that we fail to be concerned with the cleanliness of their heart, and our witness to them.
